Have you ever stopped to think about where things we take advantage of every day come from? Whoever thought about taking something from a chicken, opening it up and cooking it could be the main ingredient for a lemon meringue pie? No one eats the shells, that I know of, or anything else the birds leave behind. (No pun intended.)
Who has the time and energy to stop and think when we can leave that up to others to figure out? And speaking of figuring things out, what if there was nothing to figure out? And that is meant quite literally! Is “nothing” truly nothing, and does it even exist?
According to an ancient Greek philospher, Parmenides, it is impossible to create “nothing” from nothing. He argues that to speak of a thing, such a thing needs to exist. Therefore, there cannot be a coming into being, passing out of being, or not being at all, if it is not thought of or in existence in the first place. Things cannot be created by simply making them up.
Curiously enough, other philosphers such as Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle agreed with him. According to the best seller The Secret, from Rhonda Byrne, these philosphers agree differently. Visionary Michael Beckwith claims that “out of nowhere and out of nothing a way will be made” if someone follows their inner song. Doesn’t this contradict what the great philosphers were originally stating? Had they changed their minds? (For the record, what these people are stating, is true.)
Can something come from nothing? For those who want to rely on what they’ve been told by their ancestors, the answer is easy–it’s God. For those searching, the answer is God (whatever one chooses to call Him), and eternal life.
The next time one feels ambitious enough to think for oneself, instead of using objects already invented by someone else, they should take the time to discover for themselves some of the items others have invented, like how they are able to wipe their derrieres in comfort, and begin a journey of his or her own. The journey away from the television, the traffic, the video games, and the work… take time to meditate and have a conversation of logic. Who knows, maybe there’s something in your head to benefit all of mankind!
